For a first trip to China, the biggest challenge is usually not what to do, but where to go and how to plan your trip. China is huge, so it's better not to visit too many cities in one trip.
1. Decide How Many Cities to Visit
For a 7–10 day trip, we recommend choosing 2–3 cities.
For history and culture: Beijing, Xi'an
For food: Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou
For nature: Guilin, Zhangjiajie, Yunnan
For shopping and modern cities: Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou
2. How to Travel Between Cities?
China has a very convenient high-speed rail network. For shorter distances, high-speed trains are usually a good choice, while flights are more suitable for longer distances.
If it's your first time in China, it's a good idea to arrange your flights, train tickets and transfers in advance to avoid the hassle of navigating unfamiliar transport systems.
3. Don't Pack Your Itinerary Too Tightly
Try not to visit too many attractions in one day. Planning 2–3 main activities per day and leaving some time for meals, shopping and rest will make your trip much more enjoyable.
4. What Should You Prepare Before Your Trip?
It's recommended to prepare:
Visa and entry requirements
Hotels and transportation
Mobile internet
WeChat, Alipay and other payment methods
Translation apps
Travel insurance
5. For Your First Trip, Consider a Private Tour or Group Tour
If it's your first time visiting China, you're travelling with elderly family members or children, travelling in a group, or planning to visit several cities, a private customised tour or group tour can make the trip much easier.
A travel agency can arrange your itinerary, hotels, transportation, entrance tickets and local guides in advance. You'll also have someone to assist with language, transportation and other unexpected situations along the way.
You don't need to see all of China on your first trip.
Choose 2–3 cities, plan your time well, and enjoy the journey at a comfortable pace.
