Every winter, Northeast China enters one of its most spectacular seasons for ice and snow tourism.

Chagan Lake Winter Fishing is one of the region's most distinctive traditional fishing practices. Fishermen drill holes through the thick ice, position large nets beneath the frozen lake, and use traditional equipment, including horse-drawn winches, to haul in their catch. As the nets emerge from beneath the ice, the sight of freshly caught fish creates a dramatic spectacle filled with local character and tradition.

Beyond fishing itself, the tradition reflects the fishing culture of local Mongolian communities and generations of knowledge shaped by life around the lake. Its techniques demonstrate how people have adapted to the natural environment and developed a distinctive relationship with the land and water. In 2008, Chagan Lake Winter Fishing was included in China's second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage items.

During the Winter Fishing Festival, Chagan Lake typically hosts an opening ceremony and a range of cultural tourism activities. The auction of the first fish, known as the “first catch,” is a particular highlight, symbolizing good fortune and a prosperous harvest.
